A checklist for buying your home

June 12, 2016

When searching for a property to buy it is important to have a think about the features you want or need. A good way to do this is by putting together a checklist.

Here are some things to include in your list.

THE LOCATION

Does the area have the local amenities you might need?

  • Shops

  • Schools

  • Doctors/hospital

  • Transport

  • Entertainment

Are there any local council planning changes on the horizon?

How long will it take to get to work?

How far away are your friends and family?

OUTSIDE THE PROPERTY

Is the paint work in good condition?

Are there signs of damp around the house (bubbling paint, a musty smell)?

Is it possible to extend the property in the future?

Is there a parking spot?

Does it have a garden?

How much northerly sunlight does it get?

Is it noisy?

What state is the guttering and the roof?

Are any common areas in need of a repair?

How many units are in the complex?

Is there a lift? How many?

INSIDE THE PROPERTY

Are the walls, ceilings and floors in good condition?

Does the kitchen/bathroom need work? Note how much.

Checks what's included - carpets, curtains, blinds, light fittings, air conditioning, heating and any appliances?

Do all the windows and door open?

Is the wiring new?

Is the plumbing operational?

Are there enough rooms?

Is there space for a dishwasher, washing machine and dryer?

Can you hear the road or the neighbours?

What didn't you like about the property?
